All too often we have approached problems of youth though legislation rather than education.  From the earliest ages, children learn by observation, practice, and continual reinforcement. The communities role in combating and preventing youth problems can be a powerful one: helping young people unlearn aggression and asocial behaviors by substituting constrictive learning’s about cooperation, caring, understanding, and social skills for solving problems.  A prescription for youth and problem prevention is:  incorporating asset building into a curricula through teaching social skills.  Resilient youth usually possess the five attributes for success; social competence, problem solving skills, autonomy, anger control, and a sense of purpose and future. 

It is important to realize that the Slade Family Services way of teaching social skills as a primary prevention program, which targets entire populations of youth in the development of skills that reduce the probability of the initial onset of problems.  Educational materials are used to target individual needs, such as, Future goals and asset building concepts.
